You Want Me To What?
The first time I changed a diaper was an experience I will never forget.
I was twelve years old, and I had volunteered for my church's nursery, one Sunday morning. I couldn't believe it! A room full of babies and toddlers under the age of two years old. What luck! I was so stoked that morning, as I got dressed and ready for church. This was the beginning of the rest of my life!
I chatted non-stop on the way to the service, as I always do when I'm excited. Inside the building, I made my way to the nursery, where I was greeted by a lady named, Carol. She took me into the main room where there was already ten or so babies, playing with toys. I introduced myself to the other volunteers, then sat myself down to play with the little ones.
All was going well. Then, Carol handed me a baby boy, and said, "Could you please change his diaper?"
Wait, what? My smile froze. I had to change a diaper? Nobody had told me that! I looked around the room, but all the other workers were busy. Carol was waiting. I desperately searched my brain for anything to say. I didn't want to admit that I had never done this disgusting act before in my life, so I simply took the baby out of her arms, and said, "Sure!"
I found my way to the bathroom, and lay the baby boy on the change table. I stared at him. He began to cry. "Oh, it's okay, little guy," I crooned. Now what?
I found a diaper that looked about his size. Okay, you've seen other people do it. I unbuttoned his onesie. Okay, so far so good. next, I unfastened his diaper, and I immediately closed it up, again. I almost puked right then and there! Not only, was this my first time changing a dirty diaper, but it was also the first time I had ever changed a diaper full of diarrhea!
I managed to clean him up and get that new diaper on him, but let me tell ya, it was not an easy or fun task. To make matters worse, Carol came in, just as I was making a horrible face at the mess. She laughed, and I admitted that this was my first time changing a diaper. I ended up laughing about it, later that morning. What a way to start my new life as a babysitter!
